Chinchilla-Alena Housing Requirements

General Requirements

Chinchillas are small, social, and active rodents that require a spacious and stimulating environment to thrive. Firstly, chinchillas need a cage that is large enough to allow for ample movement and exercise. A single chinchilla should have a cage that is at least 24 inches by 24 inches by 24 inches, but bigger is always better. In addition to size, chinchilla cages should also have multiple levels or platforms for climbing and exploring. Chinchillas are natural climbers and will appreciate having different levels to explore. The cage should also be made of wire mesh to prevent escapes and allow for proper ventilation. Additionally, chinchillas are sensitive to heat and humidity, so the cage should be kept in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and drafts.

Bedding and Nesting

Chinchillas are burrowing animals and require a thick layer of bedding in their cage to fulfill this natural behavior. Aspen shavings, kiln-dried pine, or paper-based bedding are all suitable options for chinchilla cages. Avoid using cedar bedding, as the oils can be harmful to chinchillas. The bedding should be changed and cleaned regularly to prevent odors and maintain a healthy environment for the chinchillas.

Chinchillas also need a nesting area where they can retreat to rest and feel safe. Providing a nesting box or a small enclosed area with soft bedding will allow the chinchillas to create a comfortable space to sleep and relax. It is important to regularly check and clean the nesting area to ensure it remains clean and hygienic.

Exercise and Enrichment

Chinchillas are highly active animals that require plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. In addition to a spacious cage, chinchillas should have access to a safe exercise area outside of their cage. This area should be chinchilla-proofed to prevent escapes and injuries. Chinchillas can be let out to play in a secure room or in a playpen with toys and tunnels for enrichment.

Enrichment is also important for chinchillas to prevent boredom and stimulate their minds. Providing toys such as wooden chew blocks, tunnels, and hanging toys will keep chinchillas entertained and engaged. Chinchillas also enjoy dust baths, which help to keep their fur clean and healthy. Dust baths should be provided in a shallow container a few times a week.

Diet and Water
